Ditch the Negative Self Talk and Create the Life of Your Dreams

podcast Oct 16, 2018

In my quest to help myself and all of you maximize the time we spend training, I'm constantly searching for ways that will help all of us create behavior change that sticks. My research always seems to come back to the words we use to frame our world and the way we experience it.

The words we tell ourselves are so powerful that they become part of our identity. We call ourselves "fat" or "lazy" or a "failure" or "unreliable" or "slow" so often that we believe it. And, then when we start a self improvement plan... a new eating style, a workout program, preparation for a race that is months away... that voice in our head starts to sabotage our efforts.

You might say, "I'm starting a new eating plan on Monday and I will limit the processed foods I eat and avoid sugar." Your brain, familiar with your habits, tells you, "You will cheat so many times the first day, you'll be ready to quit by the mid-week."

Depressing, right?

Some behaviors have been reinforced for so long that your mind knows you have no plans to keep that commitment to yourself, even when you swear this time will be different. How do we change this pattern and move forward so we can create the life of our dreams?

In this episode, I share some of my tips for flipping the script that's playing in your head so that you can change your thoughts and create behavior change that sticks.

Whether it's a bucket list goal like preparing for a half marathon, or a long-term nutrition goal that will help you feel better every day, or a work-related goal like learning to speak up to make your ideas heard, these tips will help you make the tiny mind shifts that help you make long-term behavior changes.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT THIS WEEK:

  • Write down your goals. Circle your number one goal.
  • What are the little things that you need to do to ensure success? What daily habits are necessary?
  • Pick one of those to focus on this week.
  • What are your feelings around that one thing? Dread? Fear? Excitement?
  • What are the reasons you feel that way?
  • Come up with one way you can change your environment to ensure success (people/places/things/ organization, etc)
  • Come up with one way to raise the stakes for your success (social pressure, investing more $, etc)
